Working group on the European Citizens' Initiative

The aim of the research project is to analyze the system of European Citizens’ Initiatives (ECI). The ECI, as the tool of EU’s participatory democracy, provides a special opportunity for EU citizens to challenge the agenda of the European Commission, and thus, have a direct say in the EU’s legislation process.

We shall analyze the background and purpose of the different ECI proposals, and its implications for the legal system of the EU. We shall pay special attention to ECIs which are supported by Hungarian organizers or reflect to an issue which is a strong Hungarian interest.

During the research, we shall process the ongoing ECIs and publish information sheets about them on the research institute’s website (ECI Observer), as well as short analyzes on the most recent developments regarding the different ECIs.
